Lauren Pierce is a Virginia based mixed media artist and Elementary Art Educator. She earned her BFA in General Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is completing her MAT in Art Education at George Mason University. Her hobbies include antiquing with her partner and visiting local coffee shops in new cities.

Jess Graff is a Teaching Artist with nearly 20 years of experience working with schools, art centers, and museums across the US. In addition, Jess' maintains a studio art practice and has written for various publications on topics of arts education, equity, and the importance of play.

Tara Rousseau (They/She)

Co-President

Tara Rousseau has been the visual arts teacher at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Lab School at University of Toronto since 2009. She has been on the board of NAEA’s LGBTQ+ Interest Group since 2017. She has also recently joined the Ontario Art Education Association (OAEA) Board, supporting equity work and curriculum development. Tara also has a background in journalism, and has taught both English as a second language and French.

Lorien Leyden (She/Her)

Lorien lives in Vermont with her partner and daughter and two cats. She has taught art in public schools to grades K-12 and teaches all ages from her studio: Deane Street Studio. Lorien loves drawing, painting, and printing in her studio and loves teaching just about any type of art.

Yiwen Wei, Ph.D. (she/her)

Newsletter Chair

Dr. Yiwen Wei is an assistant professor of art education at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was an elementary school teacher in Taiwan for 7 years before studying abroad. She strongly advocates public education and deeply cares about the wellbeing of her students, including AAPI and LGBTQ+ students. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, including elementary art education materials and practicum, curriculum theories, art assessment, research methods, and data visualization. Her current projects investigate the needs and strengths of first-generation LGBTQ+ college students at VCU.

Katy Rickards is an elementary school artist-educator. They graduated from VCU in 2018 and previously worked in museum programming. She is interested in disability justice and queer embodiment. When not teaching, they can be found painting, reading sci-fi novels, and haunting local museums.
